Production Design
Set design or Production design, is one of the key elements of film making, the understanding of doing set design according to a story, actually shapes how you wanna show a story world to the audience, a bad set or production design can actually ruin the experience for the viewer, we bring in understanding through practical implementations where students actually write scenes and then do production design according to those scenes and bring those skills to screen.
FIRST QUARTER (1-3 months)
- Introduction to Production Design.
- Role of Production Designer in Film.
- Elements of Design: Space, Color, Texture, Form.
- Principles of Design
- Introduction to the Basics of Art Direction
- Introduction mise-en-scene
- Understanding Narrative through design
- Research Methods and visual references
- Deconstructing Films based on Art Direction and Production Design
- Constructing Mood boards as an Art Director.
- Introduction to branches of Production Design.
PRACTICAL:
- Mood Boards (Manual and Digital)
- Film Scene breakdowns (visual analysis)
- Recreate a Frame from a Film using available materials
ASSESSMENT:
- Concept Design of a 1-minute silent Film.
SECOND QUARTER (3-6 months)
- Script breakdown through lens of Production Designer’s Perspective.
- Character psychology through space
- Introduction to Set Design Fundamentals (interior and exterior)
- Introduction to Props: Selection, creation, and use according to narrative
- Understanding Textures and Materials in Design
- Understanding Color theory and emotional storytelling
- Introduction to Painting of Set Walls
- Understanding of how to build Sets
- Set Design of Outdoor Locations
- Introduction to Wardrobe and Styling (Workshop)
- Make up in relation to character and Film narrative
- Styling characters according to set
PRACTICAL:
- Design and build a character Room
- Prop- based storytelling
- Make and design Texture and Color mood boards.
ASSESMENT:
- Make a complete Design Dossier (mood board, layout, props, costume Direction, Floor planning.)
- Design and build a Set based on that Design Dossier.
THIRD QUARTER (6-9 months)
- Introduction to Pre- Production workflow for Production Design.
- Learning to work with Director as a Production Designer
- Learning how to do Budgeting for Production Design
- Visit to Prop house to learn Resource Management and budgeting exercise.
- Blocking in Production Design of character in space in relation to the camera.
- Learning to work with Cinematographer as a Production Designer.
- Introduction to continuity in Production Design
- Learning to Design according to the frame in camera (visibility, depth, perspective and Framing).
- Understanding the Difference between Commercial and Narrative Design.
- How to Light a Set in collaboration with a cinematographer.
PRACTICAL:
- Redesign an existing location according to the selected narrative.
- Continuity exercise
- Low-budget set transformation
ASSESSMENT:
- Design and Execute a 2-3 minute Filmed Scene (collaborative exercise)
FOURTH QUARTER (9-12 months)
- Advanced and more detailed Set Design
- Introduction to SFX makeup and Practical Effects (Workshop)
- Understanding of Use of Practical Props in Storytelling
- Learning Art movements and their Influence on Film and Design
- Advanced recreation of Film scenes known for Production Design
- Learning to Develop Personal Visual Style
- Learning how to build Portfolio and Presentation
- Learning how to Pitch Design Concepts.
FINAL PROJECT:
- Shortlist 2 students as Production Designer for the Final Film.
- Production Design for the Final Film
- Students should work and create complete Production Design Dossier, including Concept boards, Set designs, Props and textures, Costume and Styling Direction.
FINAL ASSESSMENT:
- Film Screening
- Production Design Presentation ( Jury Evaluation)
